Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful winter break with your families. We are back at work, heading towards the middle of the 6th grade year. Congratulations to our team Spelling Bee Winners: Sourjya Ghatek and Logan Camacho tied for second and Abu-Bakr Abbas took first place! Great job, boys! You all did a fantastic job and we are very proud of you! Parents, as we head into the second half of the school year, please be aware of changes in our late work policies. These changes should be posted on COLE. Please continue to check PowerSchool also, and thank you for supporting us in helping your child to get their work handed in on time and keeping up with supplies. As always, we look forward to hearing from you at any time. Happy New Year!
With half of the sixth grade year under their belts, our students have made amazing strides in handling the responsibilities of middle school. We are very proud of them! Thank you to all of our parents and guardians for supporting your children in their efforts to be great students and kind kids.
Parents, please take a look at all of your child’s binders to ensure they are organized and still in tack. A huge stack of papers jammed into a single pocket is a warning sign to you! If your child has any questions about how their binders should be organized, please ask him/her to see us for help. With half the year still to go, please ask your son or daughter if they need any school supplies restocked. We are finding many students are running low on some of the basics right now, like pencils.
Please make sure you are checking PowerSchool to keep updated on grades and your child’s progress, as well as checking COLE for homework assignments. We want to thank our students for a great second quarter and encourage them to keep up the great work! Happy New Year!!!
Happy New Year to all our parents and students! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season. Just a reminder, the end of second quarter is Friday, January 17. Wow! Almost half way through 6th grade! Congratulations to our Team 6-3 Spelling Bee winners ~ Natasha Barsagade, Jaron O'Grady, and Connor Page! Great job!
It's this time of year when we see students' binders falling apart and need to be replaced. If your child did not reorganize their materials over Winter Break, please ask them to soon. They should spend some time organizing their locker, too!
Parents, thank you for continuing to check your child's Action Agenda, COLE, and PowerSchool to stay up to date on your child's progress. We really appreciate your efforts in helping them be successful. We are looking forward to a great third quarter!
Wow! Are we nearly halfway through 6th grade and a new year is upon us? We look forward to an engaging and successful 2014. Thank you for all of the support you continue to give at home with your child's education!
The excitement continues in our classrooms. In math, students in Math 6 are wrapping up the fractions unit. We worked on computation with fractions as well as using fraction operations in context. Students should be able to explain the “how” and “why” along with the computation of fractions. Our next unit is number sense with integers. In addition, students in Math 6 have been excited to master their placement tests on xtramath.org as an incentive was put into place! Please continue to work on these tests at least 3 times per week in order to build speed and fluency with basic facts. Students in Math 6/7 have wrapped up their higher level thinking with fractions and decimals. Students who had a strong foundation with fractions used these skills to problem solve, and students who needed review brushed up on these skills and then extended their thinking. Students in Math 6/7 were given an id and pin for tenmarks.com. Please expect homework on this website which generates word problems to practice concepts learned in class. Students will continue to be given leveled assignments both in class and for homework based upon their own level of mastery and need. In science, we will be finishing our human body unit shortly and turning our attention to investigating earth’s structure and its natural resources. In social studies, we will wrap up our Canada unit in the next few weeks and turn our attention to the warm climates of Latin America. In language arts, we’re reading Hoot and Trash. Our novel studies are focused on environmental and social justice issues.
Special congratulations to Joey S., Michael Y., Max G., and Gavin T. for winning our team spelling bee! In addition, we would like to recognize the following students for being selected as our team’s 1st quarter MVP’s: Maryam A., Grace B., Joshua C., Nolan L., Aidan M., and Lawson W.! We have many fabulous students on team 6-4. Who will your teachers and classmates select as 2nd quarter’s MVP’s? It certainly could be you. Keep up the strong effort!
