In April we will be completing a short unit on the collapse of civilizations. The unit will encourage students to examine why civilizations eventually fall and will culminate with a creative visual metaphor project.
Language Arts recently wrapped up our study of Beowulf and Grendel. Students compared different perspectives of the same story to see how authors sharing the same story can create a very different impression. Students also began argumentative writing and compare / contrast writing. Students will continue to write argumentative paragraphs about real world issues. As we move into 4th quarter, we will begin our study of WWII and the Holocaust. Our primary source is the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel. Students will also perform a piece of poetry during this quarter.
In Science, we are working on the Life Sciences Unit. We are studying parts and functions of plant and animal cells, using microscopes to see some cells, and learning about photosynthesis and cellular respiration. We will connect the chemical reactions that occur during photosynthesis and cellular respiration with the Earth History and Chemistry Units. As always, make sure you are organized and asking questions when needed.
In social studies we are wrapping up our Hero or Villain unit. Our next unit of study will be on belief systems. We will explore the beliefs of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism and evaluate their impact on culture in the Eastern Hemisphere.
