Honors Language Arts 6
Since it is always nice to start with exciting news, I wanted to share with you that we will begin to add debate into our regular schedule. Studies show that students, who engage in debate-based activities, tend to be stronger academically and typically experience a higher success rate in school. As we begin second quarter, we will begin a new novel, continue our Greek and Latin root work, and dig into some grammar skills and techniques. Our focus on grammar skills will continue to support our common core standards. We will be using our own writing as models, examples, and opportunity to show growth.

Beginning second quarter with a final exam may sound daunting, but it was actually quite lovely. Students just created a literary analysis poem as their final exam for our last novel. What a pleasure to read the work of your children. They have shocked not only me, but themselves as well, with the fact that they created something quite exquisite, which also exhibits higher level thinking skills. Although the quarter just began, we are actually finishing up our previous novel with an in-class essay. What an impressive feat, an entire essay in one period; I must say your children are amazing. Once we have completed this essay, it will be time to begin our next novel Ella Minnow Pea. In addition, we will continue studying Greek and Latin root words found in Word Within a Word, review grammar skills based on the information gleaned from pre-testing of standard-based skills, and utilize the context of their own writing to experience the importance of grammar first hand. Building stamina is crucial to success in language arts. As we progress through the year, you will find that you child will be engaging in a large amount of writing experiences, which will provide them time to hone their skills in the essence of writing well.
